I. Cenit Demeter

The Cenit Demeter Consortium (developing strategies and methods for viticulture and wine making, facing up to climate change). Applying new technologies to improve the efficiency of the resulting processes, consists of 26 Spanish companies linked to the wine sector, of which 67% are wineries and the remaining 33% are auxiliary enterprises.

The lines of research being carried out include the study of vineyard climate change adaptation techniques, the study of environmental measures such as waste water reuse and a life-cycle assessment of the cork sector.

The Matarromera Group has invested 2.8 million Euros in the Cenit Demeter Project, and it is the only winery group amongst the companies taking part in the project to study Verdejo grapes, the only variety that is currently enjoying sales growth out of the various white grape wine varieties on the market.

II. Cenit Senifoor

The Matarromera Group is the only wine-making group participating in this project, which focuses on industrial research into diets and foodstuffs that have specific characteristics suitable for elderly people thanks to preventive nutritional intervention.

This requires the inclusion therein of foods that are tailored to the needs of this segment of the population, the consumption of which prevents or mitigates certain diseases or physiological changes connected to ageing.

To do this, Bodega Matarromera is focusing its research on finding wine-sourced ingredients and foods enriched with such ingredients, as well as on the study of the mechanisms whereby these work.

Life HAproWINE

The European Haprowine research project compares various first-class wineries. The goal is to find the best balance between sustainability and innovation in the wine industry

when it comes to promoting the recycling of waste generated by that market, and to encourage improved environmental footprints and the use of natural resources with a life-cycle focus.

IV. Reducing histamines in wine

Histamines are components found in wine, which in high concentrations can cause some people to experience food hypersensitivities, similar to allergic reactions or headaches.

With this in mind, Matarromera is developing several research projects in order to reassure consumers that their wines, as well as having excellent organoleptic qualities, are beneficial to health.

Results from routine analysis conducted at the warehouse and specific checks in collaboration with the Castile-Leon Oenology Centre have indicated that Matarromera wines fall within the required limits.

V. Polyphenol extraction and Esdor Cosmetics

Matarromera has devoted more than four years of research to devising its own patented process for extracting polyphenols from grape skins, the end product of which is Eminol®, a certified natural antioxidant which has been independently endorsed for its high antioxidant capacity which helps to slow the ageing process.

The first application that the Matarromera Group developed from Eminol® was ESDOR COSMETICS, a line of high-end cosmetics products supported by the Institut d’Expertise Clinique Espagne, one of the world’s leading cosmetics sector centres, whose clinical tests have provided very positive conclusions regarding these cosmetic products.

The ESDOR cosmetics line is made with a minimum of 85% natural components, the most notable of these being polyphenols extracted from red Duero Valley grapes.

The ESDOR cosmetics line was created in a spirit of commitment to the environment and protecting the ecosystem: its formulae contain no parabens, mineral oils or artificial colours. Additionally, the product was launched with inert, airtight “Airless” packaging, giving the product stability and greater protection against light and air.

VI. NON-ALCOHOLIC WINE and the 2010 Innoval prize

EMINA ZER0.0 was the first internationally-marketed 0% alcohol wine drink made by the Matarromera Group, winning an award at the Alimentaria 2010 fair as the most innovative product in the “wines and spirits” category. The award was given based on the design, development and launch of the most innovative product of the last two years.

This product has been created in response to the growing demand from people who are inclined towards responsible consumption and are committed to taking care of their health and their diets.

This new generation of non-alcoholic wines is known as WIN and they maintain all the beneficial health properties of the original wines, containing polyphenols, anthocyanins and antioxidants, with a minimum level of food preservatives, at levels within those stipulated by current legislation. This new product offers a wide range of options, such as frizzante wines (WIN 5.0 and WIN.0) and still wines (red, Crianza red, pink, Verdejo and sparkling).

Matarromera, looking to explore the opportunities offered by the international market for non-alcoholic wine, has built the largest molecular deconstruction plant in Europe, making an investment of 3 million euros, at its headquarters in Valbuena de Duero.

The facility is intended to achieve a tenfold increase in the company’s alcohol-free wine production capacity.
