Carlos Moro publicly presented his first wine to be prepared in the winery bearing his name in the certified Rioja DOC. It was named CM by Carlos Moro 2015, and the wine was presented at the Prado National Museum after a private viewing of the most significant paintings related to the world of wine.
During his speech, Carlos Moro drew attention to the selection of the Museum as the venue for the presentation of his first Rioja wine “with the intention of serving as an inspiration in the world of art, life and wine as a faithful worldwide ambassador of the brand, and a reflection of the great wines made in Rioja “.
The event was closed by Juan Ignacio Zoido, Minister of the Interior, and was attended by key figures from the political, business, gastronomic and social landscapes of our country, such as Tomás Burgos Gallego, Secretary of State for Social Security, Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros, High Commissioner for the Government of Spain, as well as councillors from the governments of La Rioja, Castile and Leon and the Community of Madrid, ambassadors and presidents of the Regulatory Councils of different Denominations of Origin and representatives from the business and cultural world of our country.
The 100+ attendees were able to enjoy the exclusive event and taste this Tempranillo crianza wine that the winemaker defines as “a wine that stands out for its elegant aromatic component, highlighting the well-assembled fruity varietal aromas with the tertiary aromas of the barrel, with very mature tannins, plenty of volume, a round mouth-feel, intense, expressive and balanced. It’s a work of art for the senses.”
Over the last 30 years, Carlos Moro has put his name to deeply personal wines from Ribera del Duero, Rueda, Cigales, Toro and wines from the Castile and Leon area. These are special selections, bearing his name and expressing characteristics that are unique in the world of wine. Carlos Moro had already produced his collection of Estate Wines under the ‘Carlos Moro Family Wines’ brand in the Rueda, Toro and Cigales Denominations of Origin, and now it’s the turn of the Rioja Certified DO.
CM by Carlos Moro originates from vineyards some 35-50 years old in the highest area of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The grapes, of the Tempranillo variety and harvested by hand, undergo three selection processes (one in the field and two in the cellar), after spending 12 months fermenting in French and American oak barrels. It is a highly intense wine, with an intense, brilliant cherry colour, with a good structure and a great balance, being very palatable with a long after-taste.

The winemaker and businessman Carlos Moro has been recognised this year with the National Innovation Award from the Spanish Ministry for Economy and Competitiveness, an award issued by King Felipe VI, in recognition of his extensive track record of innovation since he founded Bodega Matarromera in 1988, an action made possible thanks to the winemaking traditions of his ancestors. In 2014, he demonstrated his commitment to the prestigious certified Rioja Denomination of Origin, establishing the “Bodegas & Viñedos Carlos Moro” company after two years carrying out various tests in the area.
In 2015, Bodega Carlos Moro marked its first harvest by harvesting over 400,000 kg. In 2016, it went on to open its doors to wine tourism, offering various experiences to tourists who come to this prestigious area with its winemaking tradition, travelling during their visit along the impressive underground caves which are some 300 metres in length and occupy more than 1,200 square metres, as well as the various plants via a panoramic lift from which various oenological production processes may be watched.
Since the creation of the winery, Carlos Moro has invested in order to improve its facilities and processes, equipping it with the latest technology and acquiring new barrels, both American and French, from the very best coopers. The winery currently has 1,300 French and American oak barrels, 33 stainless steel tanks, 25 special concrete tanks and three wooden tanks. It has also expanded its infrastructure, facilitating winemaking work and adapting the facilities to its needs.
At present, it owns more than 20 hectares of its own vineyards, distributed across 23 proprietary plots located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in La Rioja and Labastida in Álava, and 75 controlled hectares located in these localities and Ábalos, a municipality annexed to San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Gallomate, San Martín, La Rad, Las Ginebras, El Acueducto, Cuba Negra, Altazaba or Larrazuri are just some of their specially selected vineyards.
